What is a typical day like at Lonehollow?
Campers and Guides follow the same schedule most days. Guides and campers have different activity periods on a Monday / Wednesday / Friday and Tuesday / Thursday / Saturday rotation. Here is what a typical day looks like.
7:45 a.m. Reveille (Campers wake-up and begin cabin clean-up)
8:30 a.m. Breakfast served family style in the Dining Hall
9:05 a.m. Rally for campers/Morning meeting for Guides
9:20 a.m. First Period
10:15 a.m. Second Period
11:05 a.m. Refuel (mid-morning snack)
11:25 a.m. Third Period
12:20 p.m. Fourth Period
1:30 p.m. Lunch served family style in the Dining Hall
2:10 p.m. Value session with your cabin
2:45 p.m. Rest Period
4:30 p.m. Postal Exchange
4:45 p.m. Refuel (afternoon snack)
5:05 p.m. Fifth Period
6:00 p.m. Sixth Period
7:15 p.m. Dinner served family style in the Dining Hall
8:05 p.m. Evening Program (all Campers and Guides unless you are off)
9:00 p.m. Campers and Guides return to their cabins
10:00 p.m. Lights out and everyone in bed – Pathfinders and Scouts
10:30 p.m. Lights out and everyone in bed – Adventurers and Lead climbers
I just submitted my application, what happens now?
At Camp Lonehollow we only hire the safest and best counselors for our campers. A Lonehollow staff member will call to set up an initial Skype interview which will last around 20-30 minutes. Following the 1st interview we will follow up with your references and perform a background check. You will also be called for a 2nd skype interview. From there your application and interview notes will wind up on our Assistant Director’s desk where you will be called for a final interview. We have a longer interview process than most other camps, but it’s by design. So please be patient with us as we process your application.
How many campers attend Lonehollow?
A lot! But we have an amazing staff to camper ratio! Cabins generally house 7 to 15 kids. A few are larger. Most cabins have at least two counselors, and we strive to maintain a 1:5 counselor-to-camper ratio in each.
Will I have a co-counselor?
Probably! Except for our oldest boys, all cabins have at least two counselors, meaning you'll share all the responsibilities (and all the fun!) of living in a cabin with someone who is sure to become a life-long friend!
When will I find out my cabin assignment?
We assign cabins at the end of staff orientation. After you learn about our different age groups and our programs, you will have the opportunity to preference which age group you would like to work with. Then in the days leading up to the arrival of the campers we will post those assignments.
I'm coming from out-of-state, what will I do between sessions?
Camp closes for a while between first and second term, all staff are required to leave during this time. During this time most of our staff spend time back at home or take road trips to the nearby cities. If you are from outside of Texas have no fear, there will be something fun going on planned by your peers to spend your break with.
Do I get any time off?
All staff get time off! Your contract will specify how much and how frequently (as this depends upon what exactly your position is. For the majority of camp staff they get a period off every day, plus 1 afternoon off and 1 evening off per week that you schedule as a group with our activity director.
I can't work all summer is that a problem?
Sometimes summer school and other commitments prevent staff from working both first and second term and that is okay. We hire for all summer, only first term and only second term.
When will I get my activity assignment?
During your interview process you will be asked about your skills and experience in a variety of our departments. We will assign your department (Waterfront, Sports, Adventure, Global, Horseback) in May. During orientation you will spend time with your peers in your department and will learn everything about the activities you may be teaching. Towards the end of staff orientation you will receive your activity assignment daily schedule.
Where will I stay while at Lonehollow?
Our cabins feature many amenities to make your stay comfortable such as pillow-top mattress and air-conditioning. Some counselors will live in a cabin with campers and others will live in a cabin with other counselors. Regardless, all will spend considerable time in the camper cabins mentoring the children living there.
